What is a Cool Island?

Cool islands are neighborhood areas that feel cooler than other locations. That could come in the form of cooler air temperatures, touch-surface temperatures, or being shaded from the sun's radiation. Some examples are:

Cooler spot than surrounding hotter areas

Range from the shade of a single tree

    A street lined with trees

A park full of cool shade trees

    Shade of a building

    Constructed shade canopy/ structural shade

    What are Cool Island Neighborhoods?

Cool Island Neighborhoods is a community-based grassroots movement to change hot spots to cool spots through neighbors helping neighbors. The help can come in the form of a phone call to check on an elderly neighbor, help with planting trees, or setting up a sprinkler for the neighborhood kids. The movement has developed the following focus:

A grassroots movement to organize + build cool spots (islands)

Provide relief from the heat through community tree planting + more

Engage + empower communities to come together + join in neighborhood movement creating cool spots for increased comfort

    Improve health and wellbeing

Why are you doing an online engagement?

Given the pandemic, the Cool Island Neighborhood team decided to offer an online option for people willing to participate but uncomfortable with in-person engagement. Where possible, we will conduct both online and in-person engagements that are complementary versions of the same program.

Engaging online also allows you to participate when it is convenient for you. It is a quick, safe, and convenient way to tell us your opinions and stories on a range of heat-related topics. You can see what other community members think about an issue and respond with your own comments. It allows for a range of different people with different views to discuss community matters.
